We spent most of our time previewing properties, but we were also able to get in a couple of dives. The weather was great . . . not too hot, and only a bit of rain. Comfort abounds in this property with 3-plus bedrooms, 3 baths, satellite television, stereo/CD player and plenty of living space inside and in the outdoor patio/pool/garden area

This is one of the most luxurious oceanfront properties available in Cozumel; you could be one of the first to take advantage of this vacation property. We have winter dates available, but book early because this property will be in high demand. Accommodates up to 10 guests, $3,000/week plus tax. Click here for more photos/info

Quinta Anita

This is a great 3 B.R. air conditioned villa with 3.5 baths, located on 25th Avenue, only 5 blocks from the ocean and walking distance to plaza, shopping and restaurants. This villa is well kept, comfortable and very impressive and features a large private pool/garden/patio area.

This property is perfect for a family or 3-4 couples. You'll love this one and it's only $1400/wk. plus tax. Because this property just became available, Christmas and New Year's are open. Photos/info

Sailing, Dining, Etc.

  • Interested in sailing? There's now a shop on 10th Avenue between A.R. Salas and Calle 1 (and just across the street from our favorite dive shop, Caballito del Caribe). Give sailing a try and let us know how you like it!
  • A new Irish Pub, Scruffy's, is located on A.R. Salas just off of 10th Avenue, offering both food and drink. We didn't get a chance to visit this new spot, so let us know what you think.
  • Acuario, located on the oceanfront, next to Lobster's Cove, has been remodeled and now offers outdoor seating along the oceanfront boulevard. We ate at Acuario for the first time this trip. The Camarones Estilo Acuario (shrimp Acuario style), was tasty and flamboyantly prepared tableside by our waiter. The huge shellfish were prepared flambe style with white wine, brandy, fresh oranges and garlic. Service was excellent, prices moderately high.
  • A new supermarket is getting close to completion. This one is located just across from the Plaza Las Glorias Hotel and will be larger than the two San Francisco supermarkets.
  • Hurricane Mitch. We've had a number of people wondering about damage in Cozumel, Akumal, Xcalak area. We are happy to report that we experienced no damage at all, though we feel bad for our friends to the south where many lives and much property was lost.
  • Cozumel is in the same time zone as Central Standard Time at this time, but may revert to daylight savings time in the spring (depending on what Mexico City does).
  • Our Casablanca, Villa Selva and Casa Roo are fully air conditioned now. We just installed new drapes/curtains during our trip in November.

A New Diver

During our recent stay in Cozumel, our 14-year-old son, Justin, became a certified scuba diver. The instructor, Ricardo Garcia (pictured at left), at Caballito del Caribe took him under his wing. Ricardo offered professional guidance to make Justin comfortable and knowledgeable in the water.

Justin was able to log nine dives and loved the reefs and the fishlife; he especially liked the octopus. He enjoyed the experience at Palancar Gardens with the swim-throughs and the abundant coral. The folks at Caballito are very responsible and trustworthy and took very good care of our son as they do all of their divers. If you have always wanted to try scuba diving, let us know and we can put you in contact with Caballito del Caribe; you can do a full certification course or an introductory scuba class. Just don't miss it; there's an incredible underwater world out there!

Cozumel Internet Access
The Coffee Net, located on the oceanfront road and Calle 11, just across from Acuario and Lobster's Cove Restaurants (in same building as Neptuno Disco). When we were there they had eight machines online with a number of different browsers as well as printers (black and white and color) and even a scanner. You can check your e-mail (through Netscape, AOL, Hot Mail, among others). Rate is not bad at 35 pesos per half hour, 60 pesos an hour (exchange rate in early August was 8.75 pesos to a dollar). Only a peso or two for each document you print (black and white). Open seven days a week, Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Sunday 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. If you go to Coffee Net, e-mail us!

Akumal Area Property Showcase
Most deluxe property in the area that we viewed was undoubtedly the Casablanca, a large oceanfront villa in the Puerto Aventuras area. You'll be pampered at the Casablanca: luxury villa, spectacular ocean views, private oceanside swimming pool, terrific snorkeling just offshore in the natural "fish bowl" aquarium and access to all of the facilities in Puerto Aventuras (tennis, golf, therapeutic massage, swimming with the dolphins, fish, gym, diving and more!). You'll want to reserve early to secure your week(s) in this opulent vacation property! We think the rates are low for what you get here . . . take advantage of it before the owner decides to raise the rates.

There are 4 bedrooms: Second floor master bedroom with king size bed, second floor guest bedroom with king size bed; two bedrooms downstairs, both with 2 full size beds.In addition there is a studio upstairs with 2 twin size beds.

Casablanca accommodates 8-14. Rate for 8 guests is $2650. Over 8 guests, add $100 per person.
