The 6-hour, 60 mile adventure offers exploration of dense tropical jungle, remote beach areas, Mayan ruins, an island village, city orientation and more.     Fishing
    fishingThe island of Cozumel has for many years been a fisherman's paradise. The extensive reef system has been supporting a huge population of fish life for centuries. The abundance of fish has long provided the island with a steady supply of fresh fish. Sports fishermen discovered the excitement of fishing in Cozumel's waters years ago, long before diving became so popular.

    Today deep sea and bonefishing are major attractions. You'll find a numbe rof charger companies with boats in various sizes with rates from $100 for a few hours on a small boat to $1400 for a full day on a deluxe boat.

    The waters off Cozumel abound with white and blue marlin, dolphin fish, sailfish and wahoo. Throughout the year, you can deep-sea fish for tuna, kingfish and barracuda, and you'll find the lagoons good places for bonefish, tarpon and snook. If you decide to fish, be aware that it is illegal to kill certain species; if you catch such a specimen, you must throw it back in the water.

    Species that you can catch all year include: Wahoo, Mackerel, Barracuda, Amberjack, Bonito, Snapper, Shark

    Best months for fishing are March-April-May-June: Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, Tuna.

    These guys run some great trips and we highly recommend them. The Reef offers both half and full-day fishing trips. Half day trips include beer, drinks, fruit and snacks. Rate is $350 for up to 4 fishermen. Full-day trips include beer, frinks, fruit, snacks and lunch for $450 for up to 4 fishermen. Ask for rates for more than 4.

    NOTE: The Reef also offers dive and snorkel trips, gear rental, certification and resort courses (Hernan is a PADI instructor).

  • Club Nautico de Cozumel
    The fishing headquarters of Cozumel is located at the marina in Puerto de Abrigo north of town, toward the airport. Six fully equipped boats are available for US$400 for a half-day excursion and US$500 for a full day; the price includes lunch and drinks. Annual competitions include the Billfish Release Tournament and the Marlin Tournament, both in early May.

  • Cozumel Flats
    Avid fly-fishers flock to this spot offering bait, tackle and guides to Cozumel's most bounteous lagoons. In the pristine aquamarine water, it is possible to see fish swimming underfoot before even casting the reel. Snook, tarpon and bonefish are the most sought-after species here, and bonefish have a reputation for being especially large.

  • Fiesta Cozumel Holidays
    This tour operator with branches at 15 major hotels offers full-day and half-day deep-sea fishing trips for 2-40 people. Trips cost approx. US $82 per person for a 9 am-5 pm full day, and US $78 per person for a 9 am-1 pm half-day, including bait and tackle. Anglers must also purchase a fishing license that costs US $9. Trips are offered daily.

  • This operation uses Fin-Nor, Penn International and custom reels and rods.  If you prefer, you can bring your own gear to fish. All trips include purified water, soft drinks, Mexican beers, snacks or fruit and light food.  Sport fishing in the Cozumel area is primarily done with trolling using outriggers and down riggers with a minimum of 5 lines in the water. Depending on the season you can expect to catch sail fish, blue and white marlin (these are catch and release only), wahoo, grouper, snapper, dorado (dolphin, mahi-mahi) and barracuda just to name a few.  During the high season (March through July) you can expect to catch Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sail fish, Dolphin and Tuna.  Year round, expect to catch Wahoo, Grouper, Barracuda, Mackerel, Amberjack and Snapper.

  • For charter sport fishing, boat limit is maximum six persons.

Sailing
    Cozumel Sailing now offers a new adventure on the island. All boats are safe, secure, self-righting keel boats with electric start motor, cabin, galley, marine head (bathroom), marine radio, shallow depth alarm, life jackets and cooler with cold beverages of your choice. The sailboat rental service offers shore to boat transportation, boat and equipment, instructions if needed, constant radio communication with motor boat captain, assistance back to mooring and transportation back to shore.

Boats can be rented hourly or daily for your private sailing adventure. Up to six people per boat can experience this Caribbean activity. Rates start at $85 for four people for two hours, including 4 drinks. Additional hours are available. Want a sailing guide for instructions or so that you can relax and enjoy the experience? No problemo, just $10.00 per hour.

Also available: Sailing instructions, snacks, fruit, lunch or dinner and extra drinks.

Jet skiing, parasailing, glass bottom boats, Atlantis submarine
    Many of the beach areas on the west coast offer jet passion islandskis, parasailing, glass bottom boat rides, etc. snorkeling excursions and scuba diving. Playa Sol, Mr. Sancho's and Nachi Cocom also have swimming pools, restaurants/bars and small shops. There are also beaches on the east coast of Cozumel featuring good 'ol beach bars complete with thatched roofs and hammocks for hanging out. Wave action is much stronger here, so be careful. Check out the beach areas on our beach page. Note that Playa Sol has an entry fee for using facilities; go to Mr. Sancho's, San Francisco, Nachi Cocom or Palancar instead!

    Horseback Riding
    There are several areas where you can ride in Cozumel. Enjoy a relaxing ride along the beach or in the jungle. Don't expect a huge stable of steeds . . . you'll find these are pretty small, simple operations with just a few horses, but still a good time. Larger groups can be accommodated with enough notice.     Rancho los Laureles: Horseback riding is available north of town (1.5 hours).

    horseback ridingRancho Palmitas is located near Diamond Hotel south of town on the coastal highway. You can choose from a couple options including a 1.5 hour ride through the jungle to a cenoteor a 2.5 hour jungle ride to a cave, Mayan ruins and a small temple. Hours at the ranch are 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

    We recommend that you wear tennis shoes, sunglasses, hat and bring sun screen. Bug spray may be a good idea for the jungle.

    Golf and Miniature Golf
    golf!Golfers can now tee off on the island's new championship golf course which opened late in 2001. Cozumel Country Club is located about 3.5 miles north of town near Country Club Estates. Play 9 holes or all 18. Rate is approx. $125 for 18 holes, including a cart. Rental clubs, shoes area available. Beverage cart makes rounds on the course. There is also restaurant/snack bar with covered outdoor seating. Cozumel Country Club offers practice area with putting green, practice tee, chipping green and practice bunker. Nicklaus rental clubs, Footjoy rental shoes and golf instruction are available. Currently open to the public, but in the future may only be open to members.     Miniature Golf is fun for the whole family! Cozumel Putting Course is located on the corner of 1st St. South and 15th Avenue (if you find the water tower, you can't miss the mini golf); it's just across the street from the Diamond Cafe Bakery. Miniature golf is inexpensive to play and the course is challenging with traps and lots of water. We would recommend you play in the evening and take advantage of the cool breezes. Walkie-talkies are provided so you can order frosty cold beer, sangria or soft drinks, delivered to you while you play.


Tennis, Squash and MORE . . .
  • Sunday Fiesta in the Plaza: It's a Sunday tradition in Cozumel for locals to gather in the central plaza for live music, food and fun. Locals, dressed in the best, converge on the plaza for an evening of dancing and socializing. Gringos are welcome, too!
  • Jean Laffite Snorkel Tour: Operated by Caballito del Caribe Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Tour includes cruise on pirate-style ship with Mexican buffet lunch, snorkeling on two reefs with a certified snorkel guide, free souvenir snorkel, music and entertaining and open bar. On the island phone 872-1449 or 869-1034 for reservations.
  • Tennis: Bring your rackets and enjoy tennis each day. Public courts are available at the sports field located on 11th Street and 40th Ave. You'll also find basketball courts, soccer fields, and running track.
  • Squash: New squash courts are open to the public. Take Juarez to 75th Ave. and turn left just before the gas station. Squash courts are located on the corner of the next block on the left. Stop in or call to make a reservation and try this fast indoor game, similar to racquetball. Racquets and ball are provided. Reservations: 869-1878, 872-7445, or cell 044-987-800-7043.
  • Spectator Sports: You can usually find soccer games or practices at local fields in town. Baseball is also played at the stadium on 30th Ave.
  • Movies: Cozumel has a 5-screen cinema called Cinepolis. Located directly behind Chedraui on the second floor of the new mall. Cost ranges from 20 to 40 pesos ($2-$4 US) depending on the time and day that you go. Current releases are shown in English with Spanish subtitles. Wednesday is 1/2 price day!
  • Massage: Treat yourself to a soothing massage and improve your health and wellness. Your body will love it!
