Fishing

The island of Cozumel has for many years been a fisherman's paradise. The extensive reef system has been supporting a huge population of fish life for centuries. The abundance of fish has long provided the island with a steady supply of fresh fish. Sports fishermen discovered the excitement of fishing in Cozumel's waters years ago, long before diving became so popular.

fishingToday deep sea and bonefishing are major attractions. You'll find a number of charger companies with boats in various sizes with rates from $100 for a few hours on a small boat to $1400 for a full day on a deluxe boat.

The waters off Cozumel abound with white and blue marlin, dolphin fish, sailfish and wahoo. Throughout the year, you can deep-sea fish for tuna, kingfish and barracuda, and you'll find the lagoons good places for bonefish, tarpon and snook. If you decide to fish, be aware that it is illegal to kill certain species; if you catch such a specimen, you must throw it back in the water.

Species that you can catch all year include: Wahoo, Mackerel, Barracuda, Amberjack, Bonito, Snapper, Shark

Best months for fishing are March-April-May-June: Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, Tuna.
