If you need to call someone, go to one of the calling stations; there are many. We've used one on 3rd and 5th on the oceanfront road. You can make long distance calls and also connect to the internet.
Do NOT use the red phones that you see everywhere on the island. These are VERY, VERY expensive and you will regret it!
Some cell phones will work, but don't count on it. You can stop at one of the TelCel offices located throughout town if you have a cell phone; in some cases your phone might be activated.
If you are staying in a private rental villa, you can make LOCAL calls and RECEIVE local or long distance calls. Some properties offer free long distance calls to the US and Canada.
