Make the most of your vacation! Explore the island and get around at your convenience to restaurants, shopping and the island's fine beach areas.
There are a number of major car rental companies with offices on the island. Below is a partial listing (in no particular order) along with contact information.
While mopeds or scooters are widely available, rental vehicles are much safer. We highly recommend that you think safety first and rent a vehicle. Mopeds are not as easy to be seen and they can easily skid on rocks or wet pavement. There are far too many moped accidents (tourists AND locals!).
Also, we are often asked about taking rental vehicles to or from the mainland. We don't recommend it. It takes far too much time and costs more than taking the passenger ferry. It is much easier and more convenient to rent a car on the island or on the mainland.

Getting around by Taxis • Airport ground transportation
Taxis are plentiful in Cozumel and rates are quite inexpensive. Rates are government controlled, but you should ask what the rate is before you get in. Taxis can carry a maximum of 5 passengers and rates vary for 1-5 people; there are some larger taxis which can hold up to 8. Tips are appreciated. Phone 872-0236.
Most taxis are white. If you need a taxi, flag one down and you'll have one in no time. If the taxi you flag down has passengers, teh driver will radio your location and the next available taxi will be stop and pick you up.
Airport ground transportation: Before you exit the airport terminal, you can buy a ticket at the ground transportation counter. Just tell them your destination and you will get a ticket to present to the next available airport taxi (these are Suburbans or vans, so plenty of room for luggage).
It is very easy to go from Cozumel to the mainland. An excellent, and quite reliable, ferry service has been in place for a number of years. Ferry takes about 35 minutes to cross between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen; roundtrip tickets are about $19. Ferry service begins early in the morning (4-5 a.m.) and continue late into the evening. Schedule can change, please pick up a current schedule at the pier.
Ferry takes approx. 30 minutes to cross. Roundtrip, US $16
Current printed schedules are available at the pier
Take the ferry to Playa del Carmen and spend the day at the beach, or poking around the many shops. There are many, many restaurants. Or rent a car or take the bus to Tulum, Xel-Ha or Xcaret. See trips/excursions. It's easy to go on your own!
